Left-3A 2017 Right-Big league Camp 2017

Belly came up at the end of 2016. He had good results in the short sample size in triple A. There was some swing and misses. My main goal was to form a relationship. I knew I would probably have him the following year in triple A. The season ended, and we met up again in spring training. He was in major league camp. We talked about a few things during big league camp. With 10 days left, I started with a couple of drills and changed his body comp in his set up to allow better patterns of movements within his swing.

1. I started with barrel, it would be late getting up to its launch position. He would lay it behind him. Then, try to sequence up the move forward.

2. Narrowed him up.

3. I brought his back knee back underneath him. I loved how he got into his front side. The issue I had was how much lean toward home plate he had. Once the foot came into the air, it was just hard to keep his hip line underneath him and rotating in the right sequence.

He was late with his hands and he was late with his sequence in his turn. This needed to be fixed.

Another issue was how he would take his BP and cage work. There was no rhythm or reason to it. He would push his whole body forward then lay the barrel down behind him, creating a bigger arc. I was worried over time that the arc would just get bigger and create a big loop. I gave him the drill on the right to keep his body behind the ball, and create a shorter arc. The drill happens at contact where I wanted his back foot to push backward like a bowler. This will also rotate the hips and the hands will work more forward

Because he rushed forward with no rhythm or sequence, I gave him the step back while the ball was in flight. This would keep him gathered on his back side and would help him stay more connected, and have a tighter turn into the ball

Like most players, I try to get as much information from their past, which created who they are. As they move away from their core swing, it's easier to bring them home then try to create something new

From his 2016 swing in triple A and and a really good week in the big leagues.

He took to the adjustment really well. He was repeating, he was covering all the quadrants in the strike zone. More importantly, he was swinging at strikes

Belly had his first challenge in triple A. His posture/weight started crashing toward home plate, flipping his barrel over the plate, and making the arc longer and slower. He pulled his hips back underneath him more and the issue got better.
